Back vs Lay, explained
On an exchange you can bet for an outcome or against it. Worked examples below use illustrative numbers only.
Bet that it will happen
You back Team A at 2.00 with a stake of 100. If Team A wins, your return is 200 (100 profit before any commission). If Team A does not win, you lose your 100 stake.
Bet that it will not happen
You lay Team A at 2.00 for a stake of 100. Your liability is 100. If Team A does not win, you keep the backer’s 100 stake. If Team A wins, you pay out 100 from your liability.
